The heartwarming stay in Nelson, New Zealand

My husband I travelled across New Zealand in November 2018 and that two-week road trip remains one of our most treasured adventures. We began in Auckland, winding our way across the North Island before crossing into the South Island, finally wrapping up our journey in stunning Queenstown. We had only a rough outline in mind, no rigid plans. Instead, we booked our accommodations as we went, letting the road guide us. This flexibility let us linger in places we fell in love with and move on quickly from those we didn’t.

Halfway through our trip, we made a brief stop in the charming town of Nelson. Tucked between mountains, beaches, and art-filled streets, Nelson already had a calm energy to it. But what made our visit extraordinary was our stay at a little BnB we stumbled upon.
We booked a private room in a cute, budget-friendly BnB that had great reviews and looked clean and simple, exactly what we needed after days of driving. We’ve stayed in countless private rooms around the world, and our expectations were pretty straightforward: a quiet, clean space and minimal interaction with the hosts.
But Nelson had other plans for us.
When we walked in, we were greeted by an elderly couple, Valerie and Wayne, along with their friendly dog, Gus. Within minutes, Valerie placed steaming cups of coffee in front of us and brought out fresh, homemade bread straight from the oven. Their warmth instantly cut through the travel fatigue we’d been carrying since morning.
They showed us around, made sure we felt settled, and soon enough it felt less like a BnB and more like walking into a family friend’s home.
That evening, after a quick dinner in town, we returned to find Wayne watching a cricket match. The moment he noticed my husband was interested, he immediately pulled up a chair. What followed was a lively, effortless bonding session over cricket—the kind that only happens between passionate fans. Meanwhile, Valerie admired the pashmina scarf I was wearing and shared photos of her children and grandchildren. Before we knew it, we were all sitting together exchanging stories, laughing and talking about life. It didn’t feel like small talk, it felt like reconnecting with people we had somehow known forever.
The next morning, they prepared breakfast for us and gave us a handwritten list of places we absolutely had to see in Nelson. We followed their suggestions and even visited a nearby retro car museum they recommended which turned out to be a highlight of our stay.

That one night in Nelson ended up being one of our best Airbnb experiences ever. It reminded us that travel is not just about landscapes and itineraries, it’s about people. Sometimes, you meet souls who touch your life in small but meaningful ways, even if only for a moment.
After returning home, I couldn’t stop thinking about Valerie’s smile when she complimented my pashmina. I eventually tracked down the same scarf and mailed it to her as a thank-you gift. It felt like sending a piece of my gratitude across the ocean.
